5 things 'WhatsApp on desktop' can’t do

With more than 700 million monthly active users, there's no doubt that WhatsApp is one of the largest mobile-focused messaging service.

A large number of these users have been demanding a PC interface for the service to stay connected with their favourite people even when they switch devices.

After a long wait, WhatsApp has finally introduced a way to access the service on a PC. However, there are several limitations attached to it as the interface is limited to a web browser.

It doesn't support iPhone

WhatsApp for web essentially syncs messages between your smartphone and browser via its servers.

At this time, the service does not support the iPhone. According to WhatsApp it's unable to provide the web client to iOS users due to Apple's platform limitations.

Reports indicate that it intends to support the iPhone in the future but till then, if you use WhatsApp on an iPhone, you'll need to peep into your phone every time you get a WhatsApp message even if you're in front of your computer.

Needs your phone to be on and connected to the internet

After pairing your smartphone with WhatsApp's web client through a QR code image, you'll be able to send and receive messages through your browser.

But what if your phone loses the data connection or runs out of charge? Sadly, the WhatsApp web version will also go offline. Your phone needs to stay connected to the internet for the web client to work.

Doesn't support browsers other than Google Chrome

WhatsApp's web interface only supports Google Chrome. So if you use Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer, you're out of luck. A number of IT environments restrict the use of applications not approved by admins.

If you're part of one and can't use Chrome, you'll not be able to use WhatsApp for web. WhatsApp's justification is that Chrome's push technology is better.

It's surprising that the service doesn't support Internet Explorer given Microsoft's investment in Facebook which owns WhatsApp. Also, it's worth pointing out that Google (the developer of Chrome) competes directly with Facebook.

You can't block users

To block users, you still need to go to the WhatsApp mobile app. The number of spam messages on WhatsApp has gone up considerably and the only way to deal with these, is to block their number. Unfortunately, the web version does not offer the block feature.

You can't create and leave groups

While you can send and receive messages from groups you're a part of, the WhatsApp web client doesn't let you create new groups or leave existing ones. You also can't send broadcast messages via the web client.

Mobile Tariffs May Go Up With Rise in Spectrum Price

High spectrum would lead to rise in mobile services rates and adversely impact government's Digital India initiative by impeding telecom network expansion, an industry body said on Thursday.
"High reserve prices will adversely impact the business viability of the operators... it will lead to increased tariffs, thereby hurting the government's targets of affordability, rural penetration and Digital India," industry body COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews said in a letter to Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

COAI said that telecom operators are reeling under debt burden of Rs. 2.5 lakh crores.

The association is learnt to have written same to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Principal Secretary Nripendra Mishra.

The Cabinet on January 5 approved a reserve price of Rs. 3,646 crores pan-India per MHz in 800MHz, Rs. 3,980 crores for 900MHz band pan-India excluding Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and J&K; Rs. 2,191 crores pan-India (excluding Maharashtra and West Bengal) in 1800MHz band.

The spectrum in 900MHz band being put for auction is currently held by Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications through their licences expiring in 2015-16.

The Cellular Operators Association of India said that government has increased price of spectrum in 900MHz band by 32.5 percent over price suggested by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and are about 107 percent higher compared to amount paid by companies for 3G spectrum in 2010.

"If reaching out an affordable service to the last man is the objective then there has to be a reasonable compromise between the money industry has to pay for the airwaves to the Government," Assocham said in a statement.

It added that government is pressing the Trai to raise the reserve price despite the bitter experience in past which is bound to disturb success of the Indian telecom industry that was able to offer the cheapest service to the people.

Government also has plans to auction 3G spectrum in upcoming auction and is working to determine it base price.

"On the 2.1GHz auction for 3G, the latest development is that the independent regulator had suggested a reserve price of Rs. 2,720 crores per MHz but the DoT claimed it should be Rs. 3,999 crores per MHz based on inflation indexing of what was received at the last auction and other considerations," Assocham said.

Both the bodies expressed concern over only 5MHz of 3G spectrum being put for auction compared to 20MHz being demanded by telecom operators.

"The government has also further jacked up its advantage by restricting the spectrum to 5MHz only with a promise that a further 15MHz would be made available," Assocham said.

Samsung to Unveil Its Own Round Dial Smartwatch at MWC 2015

After launching the range of Galaxy E and Galaxy A series smartphones separately from CES 2015, Samsung is now reportedly planning to join LG and Motorola by launching a smartwatch with a round dial at the upcoming MWC 2015 event.

The smartwatch is being said to carry the name SM-R720 (codename 'Orbis') and run on Samsung's own Tizen OS, which until now has been seen in company's Gear and Gear S wearables.

The leak, which comes courtesy Sammobile, is also being linked to Samsung recently being granted three patents for smartwatches with circular dial design. The patents, which were filed for back in 2013, showed the South Korean firm working on a rotating ring technology on its smartwatch. However, it is still unclear as to what features the smartwatch will flaunt by the time it is announced.

The rumoured Samsung smartwatch is likely to go head to head against the Apple's upcoming Watch, which was introduced in September last year. Also, LG might also introduce its new round-dialled smartwatch, which has been teased already at the ongoing CES 2015 event. As per the latest reports, the smartwatch is made for Audi, a popular automobile manufacturer, and features a three-button design apart from being made of stainless steel and sapphire crystal. Like Samsung's Gear S, the LG smartwatch has also been seen sporting a cellular data connection, which will let the wearable operate independently without the need to connect to a smartphone.

CES 2015 also saw smartwatches and fitness trackers from firms including Garmin, Alcatel, Sony and Withings.

Garmin launched a total of three smartwatches and a fitness tracker. While Alcatel and Sony launched One Touch Watch and Steel Edition Smartwatch 3 respectively, Withings introduced its Active Pop health-tracker.
