Tech Mahindra acquires US-based LCC for $240 mn

Tech Mahindra Ltd., India’s fifth largest software services exporter, has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire US-based Lightbridge Communications Corporation (LCC) for $240 million.

LCC is a global network services leader. The transaction is expected to close by fourth quarter of Tech Mahindra’s fiscal year 2015.

Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, LCC is one-of-the world’s largest independent global providers of network engineering services to the telecommunications industry, with more than 5,000 employees in over 50 countries, said a statement by Tech Mahindra here Thursday.

With annual revenues of more than $400 million, LCC has built 350 networks and designed more than 350,000 cell sites for over 400 customers worldwide. The acquisition positions Tech Mahindra, a specialist in digital transformation, consulting and business re-engineering, as the pre-eminent partner for network services globally.

With this acquisition, Tech Mahindra will also be addressing a rapidly growing market opportunity as telecommunications companies and enterprises accelerate the network upgrade cycle.

“Tech Mahindra’s deep software skills, in combination with LCC’s world-class network engineering capabilities, will further differentiate Tech Mahindra’s offerings to both our communications and enterprise customers,” it said.

“This partnership is another significant step towards the globalization of Tech Mahindra as we welcome a diverse workforce of over 5,000 network professionals across five continents and more than 50 countries. We expect network services to be a major growth engine for our organization,” said Vineet Nayyar, executive vice chairman, Tech Mahindra.

CP Gurnani, MD and CEO, Tech Mahindra termed the acquisition as a defining moment for Tech Mahindra and the network services sector.

iPhone coming With Beats MUsic Soon

Apple is, unsurprisingly, planning to use the massive reach of the iPhone and iPad to put its newly acquired Beats Music streaming service in front of more people.

The company is planning to make Beats Music one of the pre-installed iOS apps in an upcoming software update, according to theFinancial Times. The move could happen as soon as March.

Apple acquired Beats for its headphone and music streaming businesses for $3 billion earlier this year. While the headphones are a bona fide hit, Beats Music is thought to have a tiny user base—founder Jimmy Iovine pegged the number of subscribers at 250,000 in May, whereas rival Spotify has 50 million monthly active users, 12.5 million of whom pay for an ad-free experience.

Making Beats a default iOS app would instantly give it exposure to hundreds of millions of potential new users. But the strategy isn’t fool-proof—iTunes Radio is now a default offering in iOS, but it’s done little to upset Pandora as the king of Internet radio.

Nokia Launch N1 Andoroid Tablet for Public

Hot on the heels of its upcoming N1 tabletannouncement, Nokia just made its Z Launcher for Android devices available during its open beta, starting today.

Snapchat Creates Money Sending Option in Software

Snapchat has unveiled a new feature that will allow users to send money to other clients of the messaging app.

Snapcash is a partnership with payment-processing firm Square, which offers its own stand-alone friend-to-friend payment app called Square Cash.

The service will only be available to Snapchat users in the United States who are over 18 years old.

None of a user's personal financial information will be stored on Snapchat's servers.

Security concerns

Almost immediately, the news of the money-sending feature was met with some raised eyebrows, as Snapchat has struggled with several high profile security breaches.

In May, Snapchat settled with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over allegations that it misled users over data collection and failed to inform them that their messages could be saved.

The company agreed to be monitored by the FTC for 20 years.

And earlier in the year, in January, at least 4.6m user accounts were compromised by hackers, who posted usernames and phone numbers on the web.

Snapchat was keen to allay concerns over security.

Users who sign up for the service will be creating a Square Cash account.

"We set out to make payments faster and more fun, but we also know that security is essential when you're dealing with money," wrote Snapchat in a blog post announcing the feature.

"Square has a ton of experience in this area and our teams have been hard at work to make Snapcash a great experience for everyone."

Founded in 2011 by the then 23-year-old Evan Spiegel, Snapchat currently has around 100 million monthly active users.

How it works

Snapchat is a messaging app that allows the sharing of videos and images that "disappear" after a short period of time, usually just a few seconds.

To use Snapcash, a user enters their banking information into Square Cash's servers.

Then, to send a payment, a Snapchat user types in the dollar amount that they'd like to send in a private message.

The app then recognizes the dollar amount - $10 say - and a green payments button appears, which a user would tap to complete the payment.

The payment system is similar to other mobile payment services, such as Venmo and PayPal.

It is part of Snapchat's broader push to expand beyond its core messaging business by both adding advertising and branching out into live events.

Sony's cretae new sensor for DSLR-like autofocus to phones

Seems like Sony is really trying to push things ahead and deliver with some new tech in its upcoming smartphones. The Japanese tech giant today unveiled its all new IMX230 EXMOR RS smartphone camera sensor that it is pretty much feature-packed to the brim.

The sensor features an industry-first Stacked CMOS Image Sensor with an Image Plane Phase Detection Signal Processing Function for High-Speed AF. Hopefully all of these words translate into better image quality for Sony’s Xperia range, something that its devices have been lacking since the Xperia Z.

As for the sensor it features a technology that is similar to what Omnivision delivered a few weeks ago. Rather than the traditional back-illuminated CMOS image sensor's support substrate, the Exmor RS uses a chip consisting of signal processing circuits, on top of which is stacked a pixel section consisting of back-illuminated pixels for an original stacked construction. Sony’s IMX230 features an onboard image plane phase detection AF signal processing function that helps it deliver superior focus tracking of fast-moving objects. While many may be wowed by the 192 AF points on the new sensor, it clearly isn’t something new as the older IMX 135 deliver up to 172 AF points.

The new sensor also allows for improved pixel placement and signal processing, with the new HDR imaging function that is now compatible with both video recording and imaging. Meaning that Sony’s next Xperia smartphone will feature 4K HDR video recording.

Hopefully the processor is capable of keeping with all of the above processing and does not heat up like its predecessors leading to that 1 minute limit on your memories.

The new sensor like every other one in the past will begin shipping to interested manufacturers by April next year for a price tag of 18 USD. Sony also plans to extend the line up by adding a sensor with a 16 MP stacked CMOS image sensor equipped with image plane phase detection AF and HDR imaging functions by the end of the next fiscal year.

Mercedes-Benz Create New LED Head lamp Technology

We've seen the other German car manufacturers - Audi and BMW - move onto laser head-lamp technology. Looks like Mercedes-Benz is finally catching up since it recently introduced its next-gen LED head-lamps.

Mercedes-Benz said that the company will soon begin producing head-lights with 84 LEDs; compared to the current 24 LEDs in the CLS, it is over three times the number. The company also confirmed plans to incorporate High Range LED high beams into their LED head-lamps in the near future. This additional high beam will employ state-of-the-art high-performance LEDs to provide high beam ranges of over 600 meters (1968 feet) in driving situations without any oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead.

The company also took a dig at laser technology used in head-lamps by saying that "LED technology achieves this performance at markedly lower costs and with a manageable degree of complexity."

From what we can see of the head-lamps, it also previews the new look of the S-Class Coupe. We will know exactly which car it is soon.
