Touchwiz Themes Launched by Samsung Very Soon

TouchWiz isn’t for everyone and, indeed, we’ve complained that sometimes it feels too clunky or overloaded for the end-user. That may change soon, at least part of it, if Samsung allows users to tweak the way TouchWiz looks on their Galaxy smartphones. According to HDblog, the South Korea-based company is working on a new project that might allow users to choose between various pre-loaded TouchWiz themes.
HDBlog published two images that we aren’t able to verify the legitimacy of, and said the photos suggests users will soon be able to choose from what appears to be one of six different themes on their smartphones. In a second shot, we see that the S Finder tool has been moved within the navigation menu. We admit the images below do look suspect, at least considering the borders of the display in the one that allegedly shows off the themes, but the general idea that Samsung may allow you to tweak TouchWiz does seem plausible.
We don’t know if this is coming in the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, which Samsung appears to already be working on, or if it’s even actually coming at all. Still, it would be a welcome change on Samsung smartphones, which don’t allow you to tweak the colors or other aspects of the UI out of the box. Sure, you can install a third-party launcher, but colors inside menus and in other areas can’t be changed right now.
The themes appear to be titled “dolce,” “classico,” “naturale,” “artiguanato,” and “Samsung base,” though those titles are in Italian. Loosely translated, those translate to “sweet,” “classic,” natural,” and “handicraft.”

Peoples Say iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Screen Scratchs Very Easily

Maybe we do need sapphire smartphone displays after all. Hundreds of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners have taken to Apple’s online support community to express dissatisfaction with the durability of the displays used on both phones. Most of the complaints suggest that the displays on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are scratching easily, some say more easily than on earlier models of the iPhone.
The complaints were first spotted by AppleInsider, which notes specific comments made by folks who say they have taken great care of their new phones, but are still noticing scratches, particularly around the corners. As the site also notes, Apple has advertised that it actually increased the durability of its displays this time around, using what it says is “ion strengthened” glass on the new models.
“After 2 years of heavy use and no screen cover, my iPhone 5 never had a scratch,” one user complained on Apple’s forums in a thread that has more than 660 responses. “Less than a week into owning an iPhone 6, I have a good sized scratch on my screen.  So disappointed.  I only ever had a bumper on my old phone and would totally throw it in my purse with my other stuff with no issues. Now I guess I’ll have to get a cover for the screen. Definitely seemed easier to scratch.”
AppleInsider suggests that, perhaps, the new rounded edges on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus make the display more susceptible to scratching. While one of our own in-house units has a few nicks, it’s largely unscratched, though this phone has a case on it that protects the outer curves, which lends some support to AppleInsider‘s hypothesis. The news outlet suggests some folks have been able to replace units taken to Apple but the company has so far not made any statements on the matter, and we doubt it will.
The best bet? Grab a screen protector and a case. It certainly takes away from the overall industrial design, but at least you’re protecting your phone from keys and other objects floating around in your pockets.

Cyanogen “Themes” App Takes Android Customization to New Levels

Cyanogen already offers customization options beyond anything stock Android can do, but a new app from the company promises to take smartphone personalization to a whole new level. “Themes” is a new app for Cyanogen OS announced on Monday, which lets you tweak every single thing about your operating system. In short, it looks pretty awesome.
Themes actually reminds us of the Theme Store, which let you choose from a list of free and paid themes or mix and match different styles with the OnePlus One. Now, it looks like Cyanogen is bringing that same feature to even more devices. That means you’ll be able to tweak the font, color, icon style, status bar and more on any phone or tablet running Cyanogen OS.
The company doesn’t offer any specifics on when Themes will be available, though it’s possible the new app could launch in time to ship with the first batch of Cyanogen-powered smartphones from Micromax. There’s also no word on how pricing will work; we’re guessing Themes itself will be free, while some themes could cost a buck or two (or more).
We can’t wait to try out Themes for ourselves, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for any more news from Cyanogen.
