Jolla Tablet, the world’s first slate powered by Sailfish OS, caused a lot of excitement late last week when it made its debut on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. Two days later, the device has already raised almost $1.2 million, four times its original funding goal.
There are a lot of reasons why people are excited about the Jolla Tablet. Not only does it look fantastic and come packing some great specifications, but early backers have been able to secure theirs for an incredibly affordable price — under $200.
In addition, its Sailfish OS, an open-source platform developed by Jolla, looks super exciting on a tablet.
Jolla’s promises for the Tablet are pretty impressive, too. “Jolla Tablet’s Sailfish operating system will be unlike anything you’ve tried before,” its Indiegogo description reads. “Once you try it, you’ll never want to go back.”
Kind of like BlackBerry 10, users navigate Sailfish OS using only touch gestures. It runs all the Android apps you already love — plus those developed natively for Sailfish — and it promises to deliver the best multitasking experience you’ve ever seen on a tablet device.
Jolla Tablet boasts a 7.9-inch display with a 2048×1536 resolution, and it’s powered by a 64-bit, quad-core Intel processor and 2GB of RAM. It has 32GB of internal storage as standard — plus a microSD card slot for expansion — and a 4,300mAh battery. There’s also a 5-megapixel camera on its back, and a 2-megapixel camera on its front.
When Jolla Tablet made its Indiegogo debut, the first 1,000 backers were able to get it for $189. As you might expect, those were quickly snapped up, and so were the second 1,000 that sold for $199. After that, 2,000 units were made available for $204, and until the current batch is all claimed, the device can be had for $209.
That’s still incredibly cheap when you compare it to something like the iPad mini or the Nexus 9, or even Nokia’s upcoming N1 tablet, which has similar specifications but will sell for $249.
Jolla Tablet’s original funding goal was $380,000, but it surpassed that within just a few hours. Two days later, the total amount of cash raised sits at $1,189,716, and there are still 17 left to go before the campaign comes to an end.
