Nokia Lumia 730 Captures 1151 People Selfie

A group of at least 1,151 people in Bangladesh have taken a selfie together with their Nokia Lumia 730 smartphone — making it one of the gigantic selfies fit to become the world’s largest selfie.

The five megapixel mid-range Windows Phone found a smart way to advertise its front-facing camera and asked people to come for the self-portrait. Posted on the Facebook page of Microsoft Lumia Bangladesh, the photo apparently required people to sign up to keep a track of how many were there.

It has been liked by more than 20,000 people on the page so far.

Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie is still on top with 3.37 million retweets and 2.01 favourites but the Lumia photo could claim a record for the largest number of people in a selfie.

The record is yet to be confirmed by Guinness World.

According to reports, The Lumia 730 will still carry the Nokia branding but it’s been launched after the Microsoft takeover of the handset business. Thanks to the focus on selfies, Nokia and Microsoft are talking up the front camera of the Lumia 730, which has a f/2.4 22mm wide-angle lens and a 5 megapixel sensor. It comes with a Lumia Selfie app preloaded, that lets users tweak images with beautification effects, filters, and teeth whitening.

Jolla Tablet Earn $1.2 Million in Two Days

Jolla Tablet, the world’s first slate powered by Sailfish OS, caused a lot of excitement late last week when it made its debut on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. Two days later, the device has already raised almost $1.2 million, four times its original funding goal.

There are a lot of reasons why people are excited about the Jolla Tablet. Not only does it look fantastic and come packing some great specifications, but early backers have been able to secure theirs for an incredibly affordable price — under $200.

In addition, its Sailfish OS, an open-source platform developed by Jolla, looks super exciting on a tablet.

Jolla’s promises for the Tablet are pretty impressive, too. “Jolla Tablet’s Sailfish operating system will be unlike anything you’ve tried before,” its Indiegogo description reads. “Once you try it, you’ll never want to go back.”

Kind of like BlackBerry 10, users navigate Sailfish OS using only touch gestures. It runs all the Android apps you already love — plus those developed natively for Sailfish — and it promises to deliver the best multitasking experience you’ve ever seen on a tablet device.

Jolla Tablet boasts a 7.9-inch display with a 2048×1536 resolution, and it’s powered by a 64-bit, quad-core Intel processor and 2GB of RAM. It has 32GB of internal storage as standard — plus a microSD card slot for expansion — and a 4,300mAh battery. There’s also a 5-megapixel camera on its back, and a 2-megapixel camera on its front.

When Jolla Tablet made its Indiegogo debut, the first 1,000 backers were able to get it for $189. As you might expect, those were quickly snapped up, and so were the second 1,000 that sold for $199. After that, 2,000 units were made available for $204, and until the current batch is all claimed, the device can be had for $209.

That’s still incredibly cheap when you compare it to something like the iPad mini or the Nexus 9, or even Nokia’s upcoming N1 tablet, which has similar specifications but will sell for $249.

Jolla Tablet’s original funding goal was $380,000, but it surpassed that within just a few hours. Two days later, the total amount of cash raised sits at $1,189,716, and there are still 17 left to go before the campaign comes to an end.

The next generation of LTE chips are all about the upload

This week Qualcomm unveiled its next generation LTE modem, which boasts another big theoretical boost in download speeds up to 450 Mbps. But in this announcement Qualcomm made special note of a feature that has long been ignored in 4G: upload speeds.

Qualcomm’s new Gobi 9×45 modem actually doubles the possible uplink bandwidth between a device to 100 Mbps. Ever since the first LTE networks came online six years ago, uplink speeds have never crossed the 50-Mbps threshold (and in reality, most networks see much slower real world speeds).

Why? In an interview earlier this year, Intel chief wireless technologist Ken Stewart explained that the upstream component of the network was never the biggest priority when LTE standards because the use cases the industry envisioned were things like video and app downloads. But as we move toward cloud services, video chat and many more applications that require symmetric bandwidth, the uplink has taken on new importance, Stewart said.

Consequently, the radio chipmakers are looking to leap over several iterations of the LTE standard to get to devices that have beefier uplink capabilities. The chip Qualcomm just announced — in standards-speak — supports category 10 LTE, which means it can use an LTE-Advanced technique called carrier aggregation to send data to the tower over two separate transmissions on different frequencies.

We’re already starting to see carrier aggregation used in the downlink in Asia and Europe (and we’ll soon see it here in the U.S.). As the standards progress, carrier aggregation will get more sophisticated. Category 10 devices will be able to bond three downlink channels together as well as two uplink channels. Eventually we’ll arrive at a point at which a smartphone or tablet can simultaneously send and receive over every frequency a carrier has access to, giving us some truly impressive bandwidths.

Microsoft Announces Black Friday Deals, Including a $99 Windows Laptop

Microsoft on Thursday announced deals that will be offered directly on its site and through its partners starting on Thursday, Nov. 27 and running through Black Friday and, in some cases, through Dec. 1. There are some pretty great deals, including one that really caught our eye.

First, you’ll find the Xbox One at its new holiday season price of $349 through Microsoft, though as we already know some retailers, such as Target, are tossing in some games and dropping the price even lower. Additionally, Microsoft will sell the Lumia 830 with a Fitbit Flex for $99.99, though that bundle still requires a two-year contract with AT&T. Additionally, Microsoft is cutting $100 off of the Surface Pro 3 with a Core i5 processor, $150 off of the Surface Pro 3 with a Core 7 processor and $150 off of the Surface 2.

Finally, and this is the deal that really caught our attention, Staples will sell the ASUS EeeBook X205TA, which includes Windows 8.1 with Bing, for just $99. That device usually retails for as much as $249, which means it’s more than half off. I actually picked it up on sale from Best Buy earlier this week where it was on sale for $140, which was already a pretty solid deal. It’s a great laptop considering the price you’re paying, and Staples will offer it in-store starting at 6:00 p.m. local time on Thanksgiving day.

Gorilla Glass 4 May Finally Make Your Phone Drop-Proof

Apple’s plans for a super-durable sapphire iPhone may have fallen flat, but that doesn’t mean your next smartphone can’t be shatter-proof. According to Corning, the latest version of its protective Gorilla Glass should keep your phone intact even if hits the ground face-first.

Gorilla Glass 4 passed Corning’s meter-high drop test about 80 percent of the time. That’s twice as good as Gorilla Glass 3, though it still means your screen could shatter about 20 percent of the time. The company adds that there are no drawbacks to the improved material. It looks just as good as before and is just as resistant to everyday scratches and scrapes.

Gorilla Glass is pretty much the industry standard at this point, finding its way into the latest devices from Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola and Microsoft. Even Apple uses a strengthened version of the material to protect the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Corning says the improved glass is already shipping to some companies, so it shouldn’t be too long before a new generation of drop-proof smartphones hit the market.
